(Note: This is being posted after our Florida trip/cruise, as the latter had spotty wi-fi at best.)
So we packed up the car and left early, around 8a, as there were multiple places we wanted to hit along the way. There was also the issue of space—we would soon have four people in Kathy’s Subaru, along with clothes for both cold and warm weather. She did have a rooftop pod which would later come in handy, but I have to admit I was nervous about it.
We drove toward Cinci, a route we’ve covered probably a hundred times. The only interesting thing is the “Hell is Real” billboard. Once we got into Kentucky though—
Kaelin’s in Louisville (now called 80/20 Kaelin’s) is reportedly the birthplace of the cheeseburger—so we had to have one. The ladies also had something “healthy”.
We’re suckers for giant stuff, and with Kathy being an optician…
Louisville’s trifecta was the grave of Col. Sanders (buried with his 11 herbs and spices). We’ll return to the Colonel later.
The drive continued into Tennessee, and as you go south, you will begin to find the colossi that are Buc-ee’s. The love child of a Kwik-e-Mart and a Wal-Mart, it’s something to see.
“Fresh brisket on the BOARD!!”
Our circuitous route took us by Mindy’s cousin Craig (one mom had four girls, while the other had four boys). We had not seen him for while, so we sat down for a nice chat.
Moving on to more enormous items, like a crate of strawberries.
By this point, day was quickly moving into night, so we pushed through to Murfreesboro, where we hit up a a BBQ place and had way too much food. It was a hole-in-the-wall kind of place, which guarantees good ‘Q. We liked the chicken the best.
We stumbled into our first hotel of the trip and quickly crashed. Tomorrow—driving to Georgia and picking up our last passenger.
